The Great Wave

Think of famous Japanese art in the West, and invariably Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” will come to mind. Here, I recreated the image in my own style, with the wave cresting into a whitecap of golden barley.

In the waves, two boats are visible – one is a Hokusai-inspired fishing boat, and the other is a modern-era fishing vessel. As in Hokusai’s woodblock print, Mount Fuji is visible in the distance. In the sky, two Japanese Red-crowned Cranes spread their wings in a courtship dance, with their necks stretched out in the shape of the classic Sapporo beer can. The yellow star completes the inspiration from the Sapporo logo.
